The Opportunity

Indigenous Engagement Officers (IEOs) live and work within an Indigenous community and play a critical role in assisting the government to establish and maintain a remote presence and footprint in remote communities. The main feature of the Regional Network going forward will be a focus on maximising the social and economic impact of policies and programs.

In order to be effective the roles must build productive relationships within the community as well as across PM&C, other Commonwealth, state and local governments, the private sector and service providers. The roles maintain a detailed understanding of the range of investment, including through government programs and services, in communities within a local region. They also maintain a deep understanding of community assets and challenges to realising the full benefits of these.

IEOs report directly to a Government Business Manager and as part of a wider team supporting social and economic development in the region. These roles require individuals with a flexible and adaptive mind-set and a commitment to their own professional development. IEOs will be required to contribute to broader team and regional strategic planning.

You will maintain strong relationships within the community and have a detailed understanding of community assets, issues, opportunities and relationships. You will be expected to work responsively and in partnership with communities, other government agencies and service providers to broker solutions that are tailored to local needs.

The successful candidates will be the key liaison point for the department in communities by engaging with the community and informing community members of departmental programmes and other initiatives. You will work closely with the Government Business Manager in the community to monitor and facilitate the delivery of services to and projects in the community.

You will monitor the performance of service providers and discuss and resolve local, on ground issues associated with delivery of quality services. You will know how to identify risk and be able to manage and escalate issues. You will be able to work as part of a team and support constant improvement in the teams community engagement practice.

You will provide written reports on community issues and outcomes and practice good information management as part of team place-based practice and will manage key administrative tasks associated with employment in the APS. You will be expected to uphold the APS Values and Code of Conduct and know what it means to be an APS employee.
