The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for PSL 1/2 Parliamentary Security Service Officers Affirmative Measures for the Australian Parliament House located in Canberra. This recruitment process will be used to fill full time, part time sessional and casual vacancies, including a Monday to Friday roster pattern.
DPS supports the work of the Australian Parliament and Australian Parliament House and is responsible for a wide range of services and facilities. The Department currently has a workforce of approximately 1,000 staff which includes Parliamentary Security Service Officers, who perform a range of security functions for the Australian Parliament House.
Parliamentary Security Service Officers take pride in providing exceptional security services to Members of Parliament, Senators, official guests and members of the public as well as Parliamentary and DPS staff. Parliamentary Security Service Officers are required to work safely and efficiently to protect the building and detect items and individuals that threaten the building and occupants’ safety.
The Parliamentary Security Service operates 24 hours, seven day a week, with Parliamentary Security Service Officers performing a range of duties which include:
- screening of persons and property
- access control and monitoring
- mobile patrolling
- responding to security incidents, and
- first aid and emergency response.
To be successful in this role you must have strong observational skills, as well as the ability to write detailed and accurate reports. You will also have exceptional customer service skills, along with the ability to remain calm under pressure and react professionally to challenging situations.

- Evidence of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian heritage
- Applicants do not require prior experience in the security industry, however previous experience in a similar environment would be desirable.
- Ability to demonstrate and maintain physical capacity to perform the full range of duties.
- The successful applicant will be required to undergo an intensive training program (paid), including Operational Safety Training. It is a condition of employment that the successful applicant must complete this training program to a satisfactory standard.
- The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a First Aid Certificate (training provided) and undertake annual refresher training on operational safety and first response emergency procedures.
- The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.
