Apply your skills, Make connections, Create your future.

Are you currently studying at university in Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne? This is your pathway to apply your skills and gain an insight into working in Government.

As an intern, you will undertake 50 days of paid work experience in a Commonwealth public sector agency while you study.

The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) coordinates recruitment processes on behalf of a large number of Australian Public Service and Commonwealth agencies seeking Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander university students to experience working in the Australian Government.

Each agency is responsible for a different aspect of Australian life, from education, health and community services to defence, immigration and infrastructure. Wherever you are placed you will find opportunities to undertake challenging work and make a meaningful contribution to the Australian community.

With years of experience in providing excellent candidate care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, our team will support you through every step of the process.

As an intern in the Australian Government, you will get hands-on experience in the workplace that will give you an opportunity to build valuable skills and networks. You will also gain insight into working in the Australian Public Service and a professional advantage in the increasingly competitive workforce, wherever your career may take you.

You will complete a minimum of 50 days of paid work experience over a 12 month period that is relevant to your course of study. These internships are flexible and your work pattern will be negotiated between yourself and your employing agency. Work patterns will not interfere with your studies, particularly the preparation for and sitting of exams. A typical internship will comprise of:

  • opportunities to undertake a diverse range of real work
  • on the job training
  • opportunities to build professional networks

If you are looking for an opportunity to apply what you have learnt at university whilst gaining valuable work experience, this program is a great match for you.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are motivated to contribute their skills and knowledge to the work the Australian Government does.

We welcome Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne based university students studying either full-time or part-time in any discipline.

We strongly encourage applications from people with disability and offer practical support such as making reasonable adjustments to ensure that people are able to participate equally in selection processes.

Positions with some agencies may require the applicant to undergo a medical examination conducted by the agency’s preferred medical provider.  Successful candidates may also be required to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance.
